Gwyn watched the cliffs from her childhood rise on the horizon. From Drakar's back she could see parents' home at the edge of the forest facing the largest cliff. Landow Mountain's snow covered top disappeared into the clouds behind the cliffs. Her mother had refused to move after the Monocaths killed her father.

"Land behind the house in that clearing," Gwyn said telepathically. We'll walk from there."

Drakar dove down toward the open field. "Hang on."

He dropped the canvas bag to the ground, landed, and once Gwyn slid to the ground, glimmered to shift back into his human form and quickly dressed. "Follow me."

"I should lead. I know this forest better than you," Gwyn whispered. She pushed ahead of him and moved with stealth through the trees for several minutes. "The house is right up here."

Drakar grabbed her elbow and moved in front of her. "You can't just go barging in there. Stay behind me."

"Not happening, dragon-boy. I've got the left side of the house, you take the right. We'll communicate telepathically."

Drakar growled in frustration as Gwyn moved quickly through the forest to the other side of the house. She’d given him that name when they were kids. He loved her independence but she could be reckless, especially when it came to family. If anything happened to her now...

Gwyn disappeared from view around the side of the house. Hidden within the edge of the forest, Drakar changed his position until he had a clear view of the front door. Gwyn stood there, knife pulled, confronting Narvon who had his arm wrapped around Corenth and a blade pressed against her neck. Blood soaked Corenth’s clothing where Narvon had cut an X across her body. The X combined with decapitation was the cross of death for an immortal Talgorian.

“So much for working together, Gwyn.”

“Stay back, Drakar. I don’t want you in danger too. I’ll handle this.”

“Like hell you will. What did they do to you in that prison? You’ve turned into some kind of vigilante.”

“I protect my own. Always have.”

That much was true, but Drakar wouldn’t let her do this alone. He walked out of the forest and into the standoff.

“Messing with me is one thing, but to pull my family into this is going too far.”

Drakar stood fifteen feet away. “Let her go, Narvon.”

“I will as soon as Gwyn shifts and gives me one of her Hydra heads.”

“That’ll never happen.” Gwyn took a step forward. “Just glimmer and get away, Mother.”

“Gwyn! Did you forget I shift into a turtle?”

“Yeah, a snapping turtle! Bite him and we’ll rush him while you heal.”

“Having one of her heads isn’t going to help your plan, Narvon." Drakar said. "You’d need my scales, and I’ll never give you one.”

“Oh, but you already have, mighty Drakar.” Narvon laughed. “When you made your big escape from the bridge Gwyn nearly fell off of your back. She dislodged a scale, which we now have in safekeeping.” He patted his chest to indicate that the scale was on his body.

“I’m tired of this game.
